ICD-9 Search Keeps Getting Better

Posted June 21st, 2009

We've added a new feature to ICD-9 search today: we now will return a diagnosis if your query matches any of the information in the "Notes" section! This means that you can search for diagnostic synonyms, inclusions, and exclusions.

As an example: previously, searching for "pseudoptosis" would yield no results. Now, however, the search returns a result for code 374.34, Blepharochalasis. Clicking on that result takes you to the page for that code, and sure enough-- pseudoptosis is listed in the Notes section!

A New Warning Message (and a bug fix!)

Posted June 16th, 2009

Some of you may have noticed a problem when searching for particular diagnoses--even though you are certain they exist, they don't show up in the search results! You probably wouldn't have noticed it with DSM-IV search, but it's possible that you've noticed it when searching the ICD-9. The problem stems from the fact that in order for the search to keep up with your typing speed, we have to limit the amount of information that is transferred between your web browser and our servers.

For instance, suppose you're searching for "tuberculous pleurisy": as soon as you type the first three letters of your query, your browser fires off a request to our servers for all diagnoses that match the phrase "tub". Unfortunately, there are nearly 600 such diagnoses! Sending that amount of data back to your browser (and then asking your browser to filter the results as you continue to type) creates a noticeable lag in the display of the results.

In order, to prevent this lag, we are limiting the results of any search to 25 items. However, now we've built in a notification that appears at the top of the results when they number more than 25. This acts as a little reminder to refine your query in order to help us find what you're looking for.

We hope this has not caused you any undue confusion and apologize for letting this bug sneak through. If you have any concerns or queries, please let us know!

ICD-9-CM Search is Live!

Posted June 11th, 2009

As you may have noticed, we have a great new feature here on Doctorcodes.com: code lookup for the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, better known as ICD-9-CM. Here are a couple of the cool things we've built in:

  • Notes and diagnostic inclusions and exclusions: We place an info icon ( ) next to search results that include information beyond the code and description. You can click these rows to see the additional info!
  • Links to codes referenced as exclusions: You can get more information about the codes listed as diagnostic exclusions; just click on the code number.

We hope you find this site useful and perhaps even enjoyable! As always, if you have any comments or suggestions for us, please let us know by visiting the Contact Us page.

Happy Coding!
